Training Your Labrador Puppy - The First Steps

So you have made a huge commitment and you are now the proud owners of a cute adorable lab puppy. If you don't get it right from the word go that cute adorable puppy will start to grow horns.

So when do you start Training your Labrador Puppy? As soon as he puts his paw down in his new home you need to start your training. If you start with a plan and you concentrate on the areas of most concern when you get your new puppy you will be doing well. You must have a routine, If you have a routine you will find that training your Labrador is a lot easier. So the major issues when you get your puppy home are, your dogs toilet training, coming when he is called, and last but not least sleeping at night.

When your puppy has arrived the first thing to do is start using his name. So let's say you have called your puppy Ben you would use the command "Ben Come". When he comes running up to you give him a big fuss and a treat, do this throughout the day. Your puppy will think this is great and this will also help with the bonding with your new puppy. Dogs toilet training is all about routine, if you abide by the rules your toilet training will be easier. After a sleep, after food and in between those times watch for the signs. The signs that your new Labrador puppy needs to go outside are sniffing and moving in a circle. As soon as you see this happening, take him outside. Give him a Command, I used "busy" but you can use whatever word you like but remember your neighbours will hear you so be comfortable with the word, and remember what ever word you choose you will need to stick with it. With all your dog training once you have used a word for a certain task you cannot change it. Once your lab puppy has relieved himself give him lots of praise and a treat. Have a game and take him inside.

If an accident does happen just ignore it, don't get angry, I know it's hard but you have to ignore it. Make a huge fuss of your puppy when he gets it right he will soon get the message. When a friend of mine was starting to toilet train her dog and it wasn't going well she was very frustrated and after the 3rd wee of the day and it was only 10.30am she shouted at her puppy, I then pointed out to her that if she was changing a babies nappy and 2 minutes later she had to change it again would she shout at it, and the answer was no. A puppy is a baby and if he has an accident it is your fault for not keeping a close eye. Never shout at your puppy for making a mess he will have no idea why you are angry, as I said before praise him with a treat when he gets it right and he will soon learn.

Next you need to get your new lab Puppy use to his puppy crate or you now need to get him in it. Firstly you need to make it look inviting, put his dog blanket in here (a great tip before you pick your puppy up take a blanket to the breeder and ask them to let mum sleep on it, your new puppy will be comforted by the smell) and cover over the puppy crate or cage with an old blanket or I used an old duvet cover. Play a game to get your new lab puppy into the cage call "Ben come" and throw the toy into the cage when the puppy goes in to get it give him a treat and cuddle and play with him for a short time and then let him out. Throughout the day play this game, when puppy gets tired do the same thing again, but this time shut the door of the cage.

Stay in the room but don't let him out, I know it's hard when you can hear his pathetic little whimper but you will thank me. When he has settled you can leave the room if you wish, remember this is the first day at a later stage you will start leaving him in his cage and going out of the room but for today just stay close until he settles. When he wakes up take him straight outside, this will really help with your puppy toilet training.

Next you will have to train him to settle at night. The first night is the hardest and you will need to stick to a few basic rules. First thing take him outside so he can relieve himself before going to bed. Follow the rules as above. Once you have put your new lab puppy to bed and switched out the light no matter how much he barks or whines do not go to him. The first night it is really important if you go and check on him he will have got his way and you will be getting up every night to calm him down. I know this is hard but it will be worth it. So many people make the mistake of going and calming their puppy and they find that their puppy never settles at night and they can't understand why.

Hi my name is Susanne and I to have been through those first months of having a Lab puppy in my home. Her name was Loretta and she was a Guide Dog for the Blind puppy. The training that they gave me was fantastic. I am a mum and I worked part time when Loretta was with us. She is now a fully fledged Guide dog and is working for her owner. It is hard to juggle a family, a puppy and a part time job so I thought I would try and help, I hope you find my Lab Puppy training useful.
