Getting a new puppy is a big deal, and you really want to make sure that you know what you're looking for when you visit labrador breeders.
Take a look at the facility. Are the dogs kept outside or inside? Look at how clean the area where the dogs live is. Chances are if the area isn't being kept tidy, the dogs themselves may not be getting the attention that they need.
How do the dogs behave when the owner comes over to them? The dogs should be happy and excited when the breeder gets close. Not being enthusiastic is a big red flag.
Pay attention to how the breeder acts toward you. Good breeders are extremely concerned about their dogs, especially after they leave their care. Expect to be grilled about your home, your family, your lifestyle, and your plans for the new puppy. An indifferent breeder is a sure sign of trouble.
Take a look at the parents. Chances are good that your puppy will resemble their mother or father. If they do not look like classic labrador retrievers, you may not be getting what you're bargaining for, no matter what the pedigree shows.
Take notice also of the activity level of the parents, or other dogs from previous litters. This will help you anticipate activity level. American labradors are going to have a higher energy level for the most part than English labradors.
Discuss the health history of the bloodlines, especially for medical conditions common in labrador retrievers, such as hip dysplasia. Find out what their policy is should a puppy have health problems.
Most labrador breeders are wonderful people, and knowing what to expect will make getting a new puppy a fantastic experience.
If you love dogs, good for you!
If you love black labradors, though, you have outstanding taste and are clearly a highly intelligent being in your own right.
